Best Time to Visit Africa for Safari
When Is the Best Time to Visit Africa for Safari?
The best time to visit Africa for safari generally depends on what you hope to see. Wildlife is most active in the dry season, when animals gather near water. However, the green season also brings unique benefits like beautiful scenery and fewer crowds. Here’s a breakdown by season.
02
Dry Season: May to October
The dry season, from May to October, is often considered the best time to visit Africa for safari. As water sources dry up, animals gather around rivers and waterholes, making wildlife easier to spot. The lack of rain also means fewer mosquitoes, which is a plus!
South Africa
In South Africa, winter (June to August) is prime safari time in places like Kruger National Park and Madikwe Game Reserve. Days are sunny and mild, while nights can get chilly. Vegetation is sparse, so you’ll have clear views of the animals.
Botswana
For Botswana, the dry season from May to October is the best time for safaris in Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. Wildlife gathers around shrinking water sources, making it easier to spot elephants, lions, and other animals. The delta floods during these months, creating a lush oasis perfect for water-based safaris.
Namibia
Namibia’s dry season also falls from May to October, ideal for safaris in Etosha National Park. As waterholes become scarce, animals congregate, giving you excellent chances to spot game. The weather is cooler, and with clear skies, it’s a fantastic time for photography and stargazing.
03
Green Season: November to April
The green season, also known as the wet season, runs from November to April. This period brings rain, lush landscapes, and a burst of new life. While wildlife can be harder to spot due to the thick vegetation, the green season has its own advantages.
South Africa
South Africa’s summer (November to February) sees warmer temperatures and occasional afternoon showers, especially in Kruger. This season is great for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive. Plus, newborn animals are abundant, making it an exciting time to visit.
Botswana
Botswana’s green season transforms the land into a lush paradise, especially in the Moremi Game Reserve. Migrant birds fill the skies, and newborn animals appear, creating thrilling scenes. While some roads may become muddy, this is an excellent time for photography, and you’ll find fewer tourists.
Namibia
In Namibia, the green season is brief but dramatic. Rain transforms the dry landscape, making it beautiful and vibrant. This is also an ideal time for birdwatching in Sossusvlei and Etosha, as migratory species arrive. You’ll have a more peaceful safari experience, as the parks are less crowded.
